A big win and big news - Milan's season finale promises important events
In this week’s edition of the SempreMilan newsletter, we take a look at what was a huge win away at Lazio as well as the negotiations between Elliott and Investcorp over the sale of AC Milan. There are quite a lot of interesting bits to discuss, in other words.
Big win at Lazio…
The Rossoneri claimed three huge points in their game against Lazio on Sunday evening and thus kept the Scudetto dream alive, as Inter managed to beat Roma convincingly the day before. It wasn’t an easy game for Stefano Pioli’s men, conceding early in the first half, but they fought back in the second half.
The post-match reactions would have been very different indeed, had it not been for Sandro Tonali’s toe in the dying minutes of the game. And Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s importance cannot be denied either, as well as that of Ante Rebic who got some revenge as he won the ball back just before.
“The atmosphere at the Olimpico was fantastic, it felt like San Siro. The goal is a great feeling for me, every goal with this shirt is like that and I will never forget it,” Tonali said after the game.
It’s a win that will give Milan a huge confidence boost for the remainder of the season. The support of their fans has also helped massively lately and we saw that against Lazio, as it felt like a home game for the Rossoneri. Stadio Olimpico, without a doubt, was red and black that evening.
Latest news…
The sale of the club to Investcorp is proceeding quickly and it seems the Bahrain-based fund could agree to the deal with Elliott Management on Friday (April 29th). It’s the day when the exclusivity will end and the fund is keen on getting the deal over the line by then.
It would obviously be a historic event for the club but the latest reports suggest that it won’t be announced until the end of the season, which is understandable. Milan are fighting for the Scudetto and they don’t need any distractions right now, even if that could be considered a positive one.
In an exclusive interview on our website, Marco Bellinazzo of Il Sole 24 Ore shared his thoughts on the likely takeover: “Investcorp will have the space to invest and grow the club, much more space than they would have had if the old FFP rules remained in force.
“The mercato will certainly be aimed at strengthening the club and bringing it back to the top in Europe. There will likely be significant signings, but with an eye on the accounts,” he stated.
In other news, Sven Botman and Divock Origi appear to be more or less done for Milan as Investcorp also believe that they would be good additions to the squad. They could be the first two signings under the new ownership and it would be quite a statement from them.
What’s to come…
Just four games remain for Milan this season, starting with Fiorentina at home on Sunday. San Siro is already sold out (around 75K) and it should thus be a great atmosphere once again underneath the floodlights. With a win in that game, the Rossoneri will be flying high.
Then clashes against Hellas Verona (A), Atalanta (H) and Sassuolo (A) await, which is far from an easy finale for the Rossoneri. Winning them all might not be enough either but for now, Pioli’s men will have to focus on what they can affect and that is their own games.
