Capital gain or break even? How much Milan need from January sales [Bonus Article]
As the Supercoppa Italiana has come to an end (and what an ending it was!), the January transfer is expected to take off properly for AC Milan. Signings have been talked about for months now, with everyone highlighting the gaps in the squad, but there has been less focus on sales. So, which players are on the brink of leaving and how much do the Rossoneri need to sell them for?
Despite the words of the management, insisting that they will reinforce the squad this month, I bet many fans are still feeling anxious about the outcome. After all, the January window hasn’t exactly been heavily used by Milan in recent years and this is something we also discussed in a previous bonus article. On average, they have spent 2.8m per window in the last five seasons, which says a lot.
This season does appear to be a little bit different, though. First of all, Milan find themselves in a dire situation in the league and there is a concrete risk of missing out on Champions League money. Then there are the protests against Gerry Cardinale, which must be semi-silenced by some sort of response. Finally, the profits registered on the accounts in the last two seasons have eliminated FFP worries.
Put shortly, there is some money to spend and Milan could even afford to take some risks, although not too many as the Champions League still isn’t guaranteed. The easiest way to lower the risk and still invest, therefore, is to part ways with some of the outcasts. Who are the latter, are there any suitors and how much do the Rossoneri need to sell them for to break even or even register a capital gain?
