Financial breakdown of Milan's 2024 summer mercato [Bonus Article]
The 2024 summer mercato came to an end on Friday evening and as has become an annual tradition here on Substack, it’s time to take a look at the financial impact of AC Milan’s business. In total, the Rossoneri made seven signings and parted ways with 14 players between sales and expiring contracts. So, what was the financial impact of this?
The late arrival of Tammy Abraham on a paid season-long loan, with Alexis Saelemaekers going the other way, was at least one positive to an otherwise slow ending to the mercato. Especially since Milan already have enough wingers in the squad, while a deputy striker was clearly missing (with all due respect for Luka Jovic). In the grand scheme of things, therefore, the mercato was positive for the Rossoneri.
Enough to win the Scudetto? Perhaps not, but at least the stars remained despite many rumours at the start of the summer. We can also go on and on about the defensive midfield position but with Ismael Bennacer staying and Youssouf Fofana arriving, that void is not too bad for Milan. The incoming operations aside, the big failure was the outgoing market.
We will delve into all of this and more, including the exact cost of each player and what that means for next summer, but first we need to take a look at 2023-24. With these figures in mind, we can understand exactly what this summer’s business means for Milan’s finances and whether it will be possible to make another profit in 2024-25.
