Note: Before we get into this week’s edition, apologies for the lack of a newsletter last week. There was a slip-up on our end. We blame the summer heat!

🚁 A page out of Berlusconi’s book

Milan’s pre-season kicked off on Monday, first with some fitness tests in the morning and then with a training session in the afternoon. As expected, many members of the management were present to watch the team in action for the first time under new head coach Ruben Amorim. Even Gerry Cardinale made it out there, so far living up to the promise that he will be more present.

His arrival was hard to miss as well. While the others arrived by car, such as the CEO Massimo Calvelli and the director Hendrik Almstadt, Cardinale opted for a significantly faster method of transport: a helicopter. In other words, just like Silvio Berlusconi in the past, who did it rather often to cut down the travel time from the usual 40 minutes by car.

Milan and Cardinale both insisted to the media that it wasn’t an attempt to emulate the late president, but merely a way to speed up the travel (as expected) amid other commitments for the American owner. Regardless, he certainly made an impression on those present at the training ground. Let’s hope that he continues to keep his word to the Rossoneri fans.

👋 New faces at Milanello

Amorim wasn’t the only new face at Milanello on Monday as the new signings Mario Gila and Goncalo Ramos also turned up. The centre-back's presence was expected, but the striker was only there because he agreed to break up his vacation. He could easily have enjoyed some much-needed time off, but instead agreed to come in for some fitness tests (before switching on vacation mode again).

Gila will be with Milan for the entire pre-season, which is a massive boost, and he seems very keen on making a good impression from the get-go. You could argue he achieved that on the first day with the nutmeg on his new head coach, but jokes aside, it will be very interesting to see how he fits into Amorim’s defensive system. I’m optimistic about him, anyway.

As for Ramos, he will rejoin the team on July 29th, which also means that he will fly to Australia for his first training sessions. Perhaps he could even get a few minutes in the game against Inter, but if not, there are two more friendlies after that. And besides, his late arrival could definitely give the youngster Francesco Camarda some more time in the spotlight. That’s only good!
