Thinking out loud: Would Cardinale even stay? [Bonus Article]
It has been clear for quite a few weeks now, truth be told, but the threat of missing out on the Champions League is becoming very real. Fans, as well as journalists, are voicing their concerns with the Rossoneri project which, after two consecutive profits, could face a very difficult time. At least if we look at the 2025-26 financial year; something that could get Gerry Cardinale to think twice.
I have always been one to highlight that Cardinale has a vision and long-term plan for Milan, which he’s eager to see through. However, after a somewhat promising start, the cracks are starting to appear and in my opinion, there are absolutely no guarantees for the 2025-26 season. We have arrived at a pivotal moment and just when the American didn’t need it, things are starting to go sideways.
Yes, it’s true that we are just 14 games into the season and there are plenty of points to pick up, but those who follow the team closely for a living - as well as the fans - are fully justified to voice their concerns already. And it’s certainly the Champions League factor that is causing the most anxiety, seeing as missing out on the competition would have a very negative effect.
It’s entirely possible for most clubs to ride out a storm for one season and then bounce back. However, in order to take on a storm, drastic measures are often needed and in Milan’s case this is exactly what would happen. At least if you will allow me to think out loud for a second and consider the factors at play, although connecting the dots isn’t exactly rocket science.
