Old Friends [Newsletter]
Milan turned things around with an important 3-2 win against Lecce at the weekend, scoring three goals in just 13 minutes. A few days later, Theo Hernandez met with Paolo Maldini for a coffee and yesterday, the Rossoneri submitted their bid to buy the San Siro area along with Inter. This and more in this week’s edition of the newsletter, which has a brand new style!
🥰 Like old friends: Theo and Maldini reunite
Okay, maybe reunite is a strong word here, but you get the point! They were spotted at a restaurant on Corso Garibaldi, where they had a coffee and talked like old friends according to Gazzetta dello Sport. The left-back’s partner, Zoe Cristofoli, was also present and there has been a lot of speculation about the future. Did Theo receive some advice on where to go next? Or was it just a friendly catch-up?
It was probably the latter, seeing as the two formed a very strong bond during Maldini’s time as the technical director. And on the point of ‘reunite’ being a strong word in this case, they have of course kept in touch over the phone as well, so there is nothing strange about their meeting at all. If anything, it would be strange if they didn’t meet at all just because Paolo isn’t at the club anymore.
Having said all of the above, it’s clear that Hernandez has some very important months ahead. His contract with Milan will expire in 2026 and there doesn’t appear to be a renewal on the cards, at least for the time being. It’s only logical to think that a summer exit could take place as a result, with the Rossoneri keen on monetising one of their stars for once.
🏟 Is a new San Siro on the cards?
Milan and Inter have taken the first official steps to building a new stadium together in the San Siro area. As confirmed by the clubs last night, a feasibility document and an acquisition proposal have been submitted to the city council, essentially explaining what they want to do with the area and how much they intend to pay for it. In the coming months, there will be important meetings between the parties.
While it might sound surprising to some, this had been expected for quite a few months now. Milan are still working on the San Donato project but the current phase of that project isn’t expected to be completed until June/July, which is also when the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri intend to complete a potential acquisition of San Siro. In short, both options are currently being kept alive.
Some fans have understandably raised concerns about the money invested in the San Donato project, especially if Milan were to opt for San Siro instead. This is something we covered in great detail earlier this year, taking stock of SportlifeCity’s financial situation - the company behind the project - and the €55m injected by RedBird to make it all possible.

AC Milan Women built on their 0-0 draw against Fiorentina in the first round of the play-offs by drawing 2-2 with Juventus, a team they lost 6-0 to last month. Chante Dompig and Nikola Karczewska got the goals, with the latter a last-minute equaliser that sparked jubilant scenes.
The derby spoils were shared on Saturday afternoon at the PUMA House of Football as Milan’s Primavera side drew 1-1 with Inter. They battled from behind to get the point, and it means that the Rossoneri maintain their unbeaten streak in the derby this year after three meetings.
